So how is everyone celebrating the longest night of the year? Snowy and I are enjoying the excellent company of a tub of Pringles and a bot. of rather select Chianti...

Tautology and/or incorrect use of relativity, and oxymoron, Tintin dear.
Is is "select" or not? Cannot be "rather", in the manner of "cannot be a little bit pregnant."
"select Chianti" Not two words one would normally put together.
What, no soup? (Or Quarter-pounder with cheese, at a staff discount of course.)

No, it isn't. Christmas isn't for another three days.
What a good thing I've got some rather select Chianti left...

The time between sunrise and sunset was one minute less yesterday than today or the day before yesterday. I don't know about your mathematics, Satyricon, but to my mind that makes yesterday the shortest day of the year.
|
 | Re: The Blue Room Winter Study Party ® TisFrank (in the United Kingdom) 22 Dec 2003 at 16:39 GMT |
|
|
Tintin and Satyrcon its all relative
relative to just how many hours or minutes you stayed in bed!
|
 | Re: The Blue Room Winter Study Party ® Satyricon (in the United Kingdom) 22 Dec 2003 at 16:42 GMT |
|
|
Perhaps you need to work in units less than a minute, Tintin. The same calculation you use will not give you the shortest day of the year as it will give you the same length of day as tomorrow.

Just in case you doubt in dear heart, here's the data from HMG: (Date, Sunrise, Sunset, Daylight Hrs)
December 21, 2003 - 08:04 - 15:53 - 07:49
December 22, 2003 - 08:04 - 15:54 - 07:50
December 23, 2003 - 08:05 - 15:54 - 07:49

Strange. Doesn't that make yesterday and tomorrow both shorter than today? Rounding errors?

Hmmmm. Alright, you win! Hell, we'll just have another winter solstice party tonight then.
Especially since the daylight hours you posted refer to the metropolis, and we have 21 minutes less up here...

Ah, but look on the brightside - that means less chance of cancer for us Northerners!
|
 | Re: The Blue Room Winter Solstice Party ® Tintin (in the United Kingdom) 22 Dec 2003 at 17:05 GMT |
|
|
Not really, because over the whole year the number of daylight hours is the same - in midsummer the situation is reversed, and you get 21 minutes more daylight up north than the metropolis.

Oh I love a solstice party. So far I've consumed a box of 9 chocolate fairies, 8 Refreshers bars, 5 Drumstick lollies and some Haribo mix. My blood sugar levels will be far too high but who gives a damn. Now put the kettle on and make me a mug of Ovaltine please

Oh no, you have to make it in a pan with milk.
I could do with a party too. I have battled all evening with a Christmas tree that defies all my attempts to stand it up straight, not helped by the fact that it tripled in size between purchasing it and getting it home. I've just hurled some tinsel on it and that's all it's getting.

Take some nylon string and affix one end to the ceiling and the other to the top of the tree. Alternatively, chop it up and make a nice fire.
|
 | Re: The Blue Room Winter Solstice Party ® emjay (in the United Kingdom) 22 Dec 2003 at 22:27 GMT |

Well I had to chop a good bit off to get it in the door, so I could burn that. Who wants this German nonsense in their houses anyway.

The spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the Blue Room!
In the space of three days we had:
(1) Moi saying sorry for being snappy (to Dylan1)
(2) 2 longest nights/shortest days
(3) Tintin admitting Satyricon won. (note - NOT that HE lost!)
(4) Frank not giving a fuck and celebrating 3 days early
(5) emjay noticing it all......well (1) but not (3) - why is that, one wonders?
Shame the snow melted, really! Merry Christmas everyone.
Is McDonalds open on Christmas Day?

Why aren't you in Hove, stacking shelves and thumping customers?
Did you find another excuse to skive off today, or just make yesterday's job last 2 days?

Hi mouse and your other half!
Arrived at 2.00pm had my bag searched and went
straight into what is for all purposes just a giant
fun fair with lots of different rides, plus an ice
skating rink and German market. The prices for a family of four to get in would be a lot and what with
food added. Items for sale on the German Market where
expensive but nice. I bought some chocolate ginger biscuits as a present and a wooden letter opener.
Fine for kids but expensive especially for the grown
ups having to pay! people over 60 got in free but still had to pay for each ride though you could buy a £10 arm band which still didn't allow you access to everything. This fair closes 31st December
a visit to Borough Market might have been more
entertaining.
see they have found life on Mars!
they found two off sick underground workers playing tennis!

Thanks for that, TisFrank.
So the Millennium Dome's still living up to it's reputation as a giant rip-off then? Ah well, if everything changed all the time I wouldn't know who I was from one day to the next!
