To be or not to be ............................. online

Apparently Microsoft are advising people not to connect new computers to the internet until they have a firewall, up to date virus software, and the latest security patches for Windows.

All very sensible you may think, but where do you get the security patches? Oh yes, Microsoft's website. Doh!

(and they're still shipping XP with the firewall turned off by default).

Typical!

And more money in their pockets, no doubt!
Microsoft are slightly more kind to Internet Novices than AOL - but I doubt they tell you the best places to shop around!

Just for once, no. Microsoft security updates and patches are free. I don't know which anti-virus vendors they recommend or what financial connections they may have with them but MS, as such, don't sell AV software, something which has always struck me as strange.
