 | Best & Worst Xmas Songs ® PQ (in the United Kingdom) 9 Dec 2002 at 15:15 GMT |
|
|
Since I've noticed a few references in other threads to the festive songs that either delight or dismay us, why not give them their own thread.
(I realise that my choice of best ones will reveal my cunningly concealed great-soft-pudding sentimental side, but what the fuck, it's that time of year...)
My faves are:
Happy Christmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon etc
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland ( a sterotyped homosexual, moi ??)
Everything on The Phil Spector Christmas Album
My hate list:
Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney (viiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile)
Mistletoe and Wine - Dame Cliff

Best? Christmas Wrapping by.... The Waitresses? Not sure, I think that's who did it.
The worst must be the Paul McCartney one PQ mentioned (Wonderful Christmastime).
But the most annoying ones are by Slade and Wizzard!

Best has to be :
Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby
Worst:
Cliff's Mistletoe & Wine
Little Donkey
Anything with a kids' choir
To extend it slightly from christmas songs to carols
Best :
Love Came Down at Christmas
It Came upon the Midnight Clear
Worst :
Away in a bloody Manger
Once in Royal David's City

I am astonished and rather aghast that as our arbiter of taste PQ should list the execrable 'Happy Christmas(war is over)' as a favourite Yuletide song. Is there anything worse than a 'political' Christmas record?
Haven't a problem with the rest of the selection though. The Phil Spector Xmas masterpiece must be 'Sleighride' by the Ronettes. The lead singer (whoever she was) must have had lungs of leather as it changes key at least six times.
'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' has to be the saddest Christmas song, perfectly suited to miss Garland. Chrissie Hynde did a rather lovely version a few years back.

Roy Wood and Wizard - 'I Wish It Could Be Xmas Every Day'
Elton John - 'Step Into Christmas'
Band Aid - 'Do They Know Its Christmas' - was playing on a friends car radio as we returned from xmas shopping one year, and was 'shunted' in the back by the pratt behind in a 'tailback' many many years ago now though, but I always remember when I hear that record

for a shamefully long time I believed that song was 'Don't They Know It's Christmas!'
Don't worry, I'm not going to mention Rudolph the fucking Red Nosed fucking Reindeer ever again.

Deck The Halls (Politically Correct Version)
Deck the halls with boughs of non-endangered plant species
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be self-actualizing,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our alternate-lifestyle apparel
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Toll the ancient non-denominational-winter-solstice-holiday carol
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
See the blazing log of non-denominational-winter-solstice-holiday-non-endangered wood before us,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Play the harp without unnecessary brutality and join the chorus
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Sing we emotionally stable in a collective group effort,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Heedless of the weather patterns despite the effects of global warming,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Fast away the mature year passes
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Hail the new year without any implicit ageism, ye persons
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Dance in a non-hierarchical manner in merry measure,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
While I tell of non-materialistic, non-denominational-winter-solstice-holiday treasure,
Fa la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Emjay, sorry about the Lennon record but it makes me all seasonal & weepy whenever I hear it. And while the message is political, it's at least got something worthwhile to say, unlike that unsufferably patronising Band Aid record. Do they know it's Christmas ? Well yes, if they're Christian they do & if they're not they don't really give a toss.
Lead singer of the Ronettes was Ronnie Spector, glam diva & wife (for a while) of the loopy Phil.

I'm with Josh on this Fairytale of New York is the best but maybe because of the "fighting" in it just sums up a family Christmas for me
Anything by Cliff could be burned along with anyone that plays Christmas songs before the start of December

Personally I hate almost all 'seasonal' songs, even those I've yet to hear [runs away, cringeing in anticipation at the forthcoming offerings from PopTwats], but I'm astonished that no-one, apart from Web-Site Wendy, has mentioned;
When A Child Is Born by the African Queen.
ps - I agree, Cliff, and ALL her works, should be confined to hell.

Frank, my Christmas angel, that list is just Xmas number ones, whereas many songs featuring in this debate did not hit the top slot (as Alan Freeman used to say, and *she* knew what she was talking about when it came to slots)

Butch The Gay Santa Claus
Filled with Christmas cheer
Butch The Gay Santa Claus
His beard tickles your ear
All the children at the mall
Wait for their surprise
It's not just Rudolph's nose that's red
When they sit on his thighs
He squeezes down your chimney
Greased up with frankencense
With bulging gifts for little boys
Leave dangling ornaments
Butch The Gay Santa Claus
Filled with Christmas cheer
If you're very good he might
Come more than once this yea
