Knowledge.....
® L.I. (in the United Kingdom) 29 Dec 2001 at 11:00 GMT

I've requested a prospectus thingy from the open university, and was wondering if anyone knew any
other OU type places. I'd prefer to do one of those 'work from home' type courses. I'm looking at
doing a diploma in English Literature or History. I know what I need to do it with the OU, but it
is a bit pricey (need to do 2 out of 3 courses, 2 of them are over £400 each, the other is over
£700!). I know I'll have to spend a bit of money to do it, and i don't mind having to do that, but
the OU is the only one i can think of that does 'work from home' type stuff. Anyone know of
anywhere else?

Once I get it I'm going to try for a degree, but I might not, I'll see how it goes. (Plus, if I get
the diplome, I can have letters after my name!!! :D laughing
:D laughing:D laughing )

Anyway, to get back to your original question - I can't answer it!
:D laughing I *think* I read somewhere there are other places
where you can study from home, but I've no idea where. You could of course ask Frank to do an
internet search for you... ;) winking/tongue in cheek

I've looked at learn direct too, but it's not the easiest of sites to look at. I can't seem to find
a page where they list the courses they do, just what you can do if you do one of their courses!

Bristol Uni do some part time courses and, I think, some with a "distance-learning" compnent. I
wouldn't be surprised if UWE do too. Check the local library.

doh Must remember to look 'closer to home' sometimes! thanks Mal, I'll check the library on monday.

oh, which reminds me, in the centre of bristol theres a big banner claiming that from March (I
think) the library will have free email and internet access. Is this happening everywhere else?

Little, quite a lot of colleges do distance-learning courses now, why don't you send off for a UCAS
guide and have a flick through it?

About five years ago the federal government in Canada made it a national policy to bring internet
access to every community in the country. In most places either libraries or community centres
became CAP - I can't remember what that stands for - sites. So you can book an hour of free
computer time a day and also take instruction on surfing the net and understanding computer
programming and software. There's a modest fee for the courses (something like four pounds fifty).

Most Scottish public libraries provide a free internet service. But try putting the word 'gay' into
any of your searches or opening any URL with 'gay' in it and don't expect to get anything; they are
net nannied to death.

That's sad and interesting. I don't use them, but have noticed the signs all over the library about
freedom of expression. Here they warn people in advance that they don't censor sites or access and
that individuals have the right to connect with whatever they wish. Now, the computers are spread
out among the stacks so you can have people looking over your shoulder. I think most people refrain
from surfing cyber porn sites if they're seated amongst the children's section, so there's
self-monitoring going on. It is a small university town. I think the way they do it here is pretty
good. The individual user is left to monitor himself. If it's a kid using the computer and the
parents are concerned, then they can sit with the child or take a seat nearby and casually glance
up at a screen periodically to ensure there are no beaver shots.
