| Anyone ever had a ghostly experience? Simon Ballard 29 Oct 2000 at 18:20 GMT |

I'd love to know. Just now as I was typing, the landing light suddenly went dark, as though someone walked past. I nearly jumped out of my skin, but I'm sure it was just the light flickering, due to the raging wind and rain. Just freaked me out a bit!

Yes, I have, Simon, and it was the scariest thing that ever happened to me in my life. It's too long a story to type out, but basically I was the assistant manager of a rather large, rambling coaching inn that was undergoing major renovations. All sorts of weird things happened around the place. In one incident, I went out of my room, locked it (and I was the only one with a key), went downstairs to work. I had to go back up to get something about half hour later, and my whole collection of CD's (about 500 at the time) had been moved, lock stock and barrel out onto the balcony.
You might think it was a practical joke, but the killer was they were all still exactly in the same order, a task that would have taken well more than half an hour. But even weirder, THERE WAS NO KEY FOR THE BALCONY DOOR! We had to force the door to get them back in.
As I say, there were plenty of other 'incidents', but that one still makes me shiver. It was like something from 'Poltergeist'!!!

Satyricon, that just sent a shiver down my spine. I've been frightened a few times but, like Simon's flickering light, there was always a rational explanation.

Blimey, that must have scared you! I'm writing a horror anthology at the moment, so I find stories like that fasinating.

Well, MalB & Simon, I must admit I have told that story around a few glasses of mulled wine and a bonfire or similar on a cold and dark night, and the full version never fails to get people looking over their shoulder! But there is no embellishment, the scary part is that it was true!!
Perhaps I should organise a ghosty BR evening? I know of various scary places (castles and such like) that can be hired reasonably cheaply. What do people think?

I like the sound of that! Being a Hammer Horror fan, I could supply hours of viewing material. A good dose of The Plague of the Zombies, or The Satanic Rites Of Dracula. Perfect for an evening of chills and blood curdling horror!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was at school, I used to wake up in the morning, and my backpack would be packed with exactly the right books and things for the next schoolday......happened about 20 times altogether.........and I once woke up because I could hear someone whispering my name right next to my ear......but there was no one in my room. Suffice to say that I spent that night wide awake reading until daylight.....

Have a story, once worked in a fashion shop in Nottingham and was in the upstairs stockroom which had boarded up windows. Heard footsteps coming up behind me and turnrd around to see who it was, but no-one was there, just got an ice cold chill up the back of my neck. Needless to say I ran like the clappers back onto the shop floor, only to find out later that the whole retail complex had been built upon old burial ground - SPOOKY!!!

I have a good one. Still scares me silly thinking about it. When I still lived in Surrey, I worked at Rusell & Bromley on the High St. we had two goasts inhabiting the building. The first was Roley who I have never experienced but all of the people who worked in the mens and ladies dept. had plenty of tales, incluing balls of parcel string found wound under and around fixtures, the free paper found first thing in the morning half way across the store out of throwing reach and shoe bowes being thrown with force from shelves at staff. My own personal experience was on the kids floor where I was doing a stock inventory. I left the area where I was working to have a quick smoke. When I came back, my pen had gone missing along with a pricing gun and some of my stock lists. I thought that it was some one who could not be bothered to get their own equiptment, so I carried on. 30 mins later, the stuff that went missing fell from the cealing from next to a wall. As I turned to run, a foggy cloud in the shape of a man moved from one of the shelf fittings, blocking my passage and moved toward and through a wall into the managers office. I, scared to death, busted a move straight downstairs to the childrens floor. Lets say that I looked so scared that the supervisor let me off work for an hour so that I could pull myself together. She told me that the same sort of thing had happened to her 5 years prior to my encounter. Ohh, shivers.
This wasn't in Kingston branch was it @M? I only ask because as a kid that shop frightened the living daylights out of me for no reason whatsoever.

when I was very little, between three and four years old, I frequently woke my parents in the early mornings to tell them 'that strange woman was in my room again'. All I could remember about her was that she smelled of lavender. My father was not in the least surprised, he too had been woken up by the lavender lady when he was little, but his memory of her extended to long dark hair and 'smiling eyes'. To this day both of us find the scent of lavender both disturbing and comforting - an odd feeling.

I was once stayed in a 15 century building in Rome - while I was reading a book in bed at night the bedside lamp moved and switched itself off, plunging me into terrified darkness. As I sat frozen with terror in the bed, the sink in the corner of the room started to guggle water up through the plug hole making an awful splurting and coughing sound - I was frozen to the bed with terror - it took me ages to pluck up the courage to get out of the bed and leave the room - it was that frightening - I never went in that room again.

Whilst not exactly a ghostly experience, as a child I had a nightmare once wherby I thought the bogieman was trying to get me. I held on to the bed covers with all my might as he was trying to tug them away and also shaking the bed.
Eventually, 'he' managed to tug the bedsheets off me and I realised that I wasn't having a nightmare, we were in the middle of an earthquake and it was my mother trying to get me out of bed to stand near the walls (safest place in an apartment during an earthquake)!

I must say, I'm finding all this facinating. I wouldn't say I read every ghostly experience and automatically believe in it- sometimes a rational explanation clears things up- but these tales do sound rather spooky.

I love stories like these, this one happened to my dad (who still insists there are no ghosts!): about 10-15 miles from where we live along one of the rural back roads, the road has been remodelled into a crossroad. The old road went diagonally across the centre of the field and a motorcyclist was killed there once. You can see the whole field as you drive down the hill towards the crossroads. My dad - a salesman - did loads of driving and knows all of the local back routes; one morning he was driving down the hill and he saw a figure basically flying across the field diagonally as if atop a motorcycle right towards him, it kept approaching and then just disappeared right before his car! Having just typed all that it doesn't sound scary, but, boy when he told us driving down there!!!

About eight years ago I went through a period of being really down about my life and did some silly things with a ouija board. For about a year after that I had what I can only describe as a black shadow appearing over my shoulder at times when I wasn't concentrating properly. It would go as i came too. I always had this feeling that if I didn't concentrate it would over whelm me. It got really bad and it would completely startle me in the street which was a bit embarrasing. The last time I saw it I was in some woodland and was looking at the ground. I became aware of the shadow but at the same time I saw a white image infront of me. The whit image came closer and went through me The dark shadow disappeared and never came back.

Well, it could be ghosts, or it might just be madness... But I've heard people talk to me, only to
be told by them that they didnt say anything. I've heard a man breath behind me when I was in the
room alone, heard a dog growl behind me when there were no dogs around, and once saw a squirrel
jump off a bridge, even tho it blatantly wasnt there... There's been other times when I've been
tired/ druink, which has led me to believe that I'm in a fictional world, which was scary as
anything when I was getting hold of a guy and it happened... (I kept thinking we were in a Harry
Potter book, and that was fucking freaky...)

Hello to everyone,
I remember reading this thread about a fortnight ago - such creepy stories!!! I have had experiences
too, and, I'm fascinated by the supernatural, and have been feelng drawn to mediumship - so much
so, that just I've started my own mailing list about mediumship, ghosts and the paranormal. I
believe there's lots of mailing lists about these things out there - I am on quite a few myself -
but, i wanted to start one based around UK members, so that it will be easy for people to meet up
outside cyberland and stuff, if they want to . Well, the hyperlink to click on if you're interested
is: http://www.egroups.com/group/UK-from-beyond-the-veil Take care, and hello to everyone who knows
me from the old Diva Blue Room!

Hi Morella- may have to take a look at that. I'm highly interested in the supernatural myself, which
was why I started this thread. I just knew that someone out there would have a tale to tell, and
the response has been incredible.
