BubbyBoy 29 Dec 1999 at 11:25 GMT

Last night me and my old lady said how much we would like to go on holiday during easter. My mum suggested Tenerife or Morrocco. I have jumped at the chance of morroco for it has 4 things that appeal to me that is; beaches, culture, hot sunny weather and fit arab men Yumm!! So if anyone has been could they tell me if it would be anygood? Although I would just be happy going to my native barbados. But you cant complain can you! All responses would be appreciated. Ta xx

I went to the Hotel Mamounia in Marakesch for Christmas last year. Stayed in the garden (about 60 acres and an ancient feel--like the garden of Eden) for about a week then ventured to the Atlas Mountains for a few days. Driving is insane so hired a car. There were 5 of us and we had a great time. The Berber Market just outside of the city was amazing. Thousands of Berbers and us. A parking lot full of Donkeys and little english spoken. One of the most atmospheric restaurants in the world is there---Jacouts (probably spelled wrong but pronounced Ya-coots, you can get details from any hotel or guide book as its famous.) The food is hearty and ok like all North African food, but the trip through the maze of the old city and the place itself is absolutely mysterious and exotic. Candles, wine, fires on the roof, rooms in rooms in rooms, and hypnotic music. I have eaten there probably 6 times in my life and I still dream about it.
I have been to the coast a couple of times in the past. The Atlantic is a big surfer trek and full of serious surfer types in the summer--. No place to stay. The Med is a little undeveloped but nice.
I have also been to Casa Blanca, Rabat and Fez in the last two years. Casa Blanca is Parisian Art Deco--lots of jelousie (SP?) windows and curves. Still some French influence. Big and a little dirty. Forget the bar from the movie. Everybody says its there, but its just in the lobby of the local Hilton which is dead. Rabat is the capital and has an interesting Medina (old City) also has the largest mosque in Islam. Gives you a spooky feel for the potential force of that religion. Fez was the most interesting of all (I have been there twice). It is a 'holy' city and there is an islamic university there. The place is dream like and utterly strange.
Couple of things: You can buy hashish but the potential for blackmail is big. Morrocan men are pretty macho, money hungry and islamic. I think threatened in general by homosexuality. This is probably one of the last places on earth I would go to get laid. Spoze its possible, but other than a few really beat looking drag queens in Casa Blanca, I didn't catch a whiff. I think women do alright there, but I would be pretty cautious. Also the population is externally devout, relatively poor and a little resentful acting. Best places are probably Marakesch and Fez. If you find a sympathetic gay frenchy in one of the nicer hotels, he might put you on to something hot---I took it with me. Also there are dance clubs in Casa Blanca and Marakesch.
Sorry I made this so long--good luck and have fun. Its one of my favorite places. Exotic and still 'discoverable.'
